Rather than the raid or the trial, this print shows the place where Brown was finally laid to rest: a grave on the family farm at North Elba, in the Adirondack country near Lake Placid, New York. Brown was hanged in Virginia in December 1859 after his raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, and his body was brought north to the homestead where his wife, Mary, and their children lived. By the 1890s, the grave had become a place of pilgrimage for admirers of the abolitionist, and photographs like this one recorded the modest memorial that drew them there.
