Kameraden!" ("Comrades!") is a 1919 color lithograph poster, with "Bernhard" appearing in its title, and its subjects tie it to a Berlin still reeling from defeat in the First World War. That January, the Spartacist uprising brought fierce street fighting between leftist revolutionaries and government-backed forces, and many former soldiers joined volunteer units to combat Communist insurgents. The poster's drums and call to enlist show how recruiters appealed to soldierly comradeship and anti-Communist fear to draw men into these paramilitary formations. The translated text on the reverse helps modern viewers grasp the exact wording of that appeal.
