The poster takes the road leading into Verdun as its subject, with a Y.M.C.A. canteen at its end. A Y.M.C.A. secretary named Coquemer sketched the scene on location, and the color lithograph was printed in Paris in 1917. Verdun had been devastated by the battle of 1916, and the Y.M.C.A. ran canteens that offered soldiers coffee, food, and a place to rest near the front. The poster's arches and its focus on the road show the damaged landscape that the canteen workers passed through, and it was made to draw American support for that work.
