Few posters of the First World War put the Red Cross's care for the wounded so directly at the center as this one, whose title, "The greatest mother in the world," casts the organization's nurses in a maternal role. Artist A. E. Foringer produced this color lithograph in 1917, the year the United States entered the war, when the American Red Cross was rapidly expanding its work at home and overseas. The poster's subjects, which include war casualties, nursing, and war funds, reflect the appeal for donations that supported medical care for soldiers and civilians alike.
