This 1918 lithograph by Haskell Coffin was made for the third Red Cross roll call, the national drive to enroll members and raise money for the organization's wartime work. The poster's subjects, nurses and war funds, reflect how the American Red Cross during World War I relied on mass membership and donations to support military hospitals, relief for troops and civilians, and nursing services at home and overseas. Coffin, an illustrator, worked in the same period as many artists producing bond and fundraising posters, and the image shows how such campaigns used a single appeal to reach large numbers of ordinary Americans.
