The Waldorf-Astoria was among the best-known hotels in New York, and this view records it during the years when its grand Fifth Avenue frontage made it a symbol of the city's luxury. The hotel had been created in 1897 by joining two neighboring Astor-built hotels, the Waldorf and the Astoria, under one name. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American cities and resorts for sale as prints and postcards. The top edge of the plate is broken, but the company's catalog number, 039852, still identifies the image within its large collection.
