The title gives the sitter's name in a Sauk form, Mac-cut-i-mish-e-ca-cu-cac, better known as Black Hawk, the Sauk leader whose 1832 war against American settlers ended with his capture. J.O. Lewis painted this likeness from life at Detroit in 1833, when Black Hawk was touring eastern cities as a celebrity after his defeat. Lehman and Duval later turned the painting into a lithograph, and the print, dated around 1836, circulated widely to audiences eager to see the man who had become one of the most talked-about figures in the country.
