The only identifying text on this glass negative is the name "L. Rothier," which the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards, and the Library of Congress notes that the title is unverified. The surname may point to Léon Rothier, the French bass who sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York for many seasons in the early twentieth century, but the record does not confirm that. Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers with portraits of performers, public figures and events, so the sitter was likely someone in the news at the time. With no date recorded, the negative is best read as a trace of that agency's everyday commercial work.
