Little is recorded about the subject of this glass negative, which the Bain News Service labeled simply "P. Amato," a title the Library of Congress marks as unverified. Bain's New York agency supplied news pictures to newspapers from about 1899 into the 1920s, and its photographers often worked on glass plates like this one, 5 by 7 inches or smaller. With no date attached, the picture is best understood through the agency's routine: quick studio or street work, captions written on cards, and plates kept in large numbers that together document public life in the city during those decades.
