The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, "Crabb," which the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. That title has not been independently verified, so the subject remains uncertain. The date, 1923, is a bracketed estimate based on negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made a large body of glass negatives in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave this one to the Library of Congress in 1947. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, a common condition for plates of this age.
