Few front pages record the first news of a disaster as directly as this one, whose headline, "Earthquake and Fire: San Francisco in Ruins," runs across the April 19, 1906 edition. The great earthquake struck early on April 18, and the fires that followed burned for several days, destroying much of the city's business district and thousands of homes. Newspapers printed in the aftermath often worked under makeshift conditions, and the blunt wording reflects how quickly editors had to convey the scale of the loss.
