Chatham, at the hooked elbow of Cape Cod, is the focus of this 1893 U.S. Geological Survey map. The Survey had been producing topographic sheets since its founding in 1879, and this one records roads, shorelines, marshes, and settlements with contour lines and standard symbols. Chatham's harbor and the barrier beaches on its Atlantic side were constantly reshaped by wind, tides, and storms, so the sheet captures a coastline in motion. Maps like this remain valuable to historians tracing how the Cape's villages took shape.
