The focus here is a single state's exhibit: this wood engraving shows the soils of Iowa on display at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The Centennial, held in Fairmount Park to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence, drew millions of visitors and showcased American agriculture, manufacturing and invention. Theodore R. Davis, an illustrator for *Harper's Weekly*, drew the scene from his sketches, and the print appeared in the magazine's November 11, 1876, issue on page 921. Images like this let readers far from Philadelphia see the fair and the state pride behind its displays.
