This watercolor shows the west side of the United States Capitol, the face that looked out over the unfinished grounds toward the Potomac rather than the city streets to the east. By 1839 the building had been standing for decades. Its wings and central dome had been completed in stages, and the grounds around it were still rough and sparsely developed. Views like this one, painted by American artists in the 1830s, helped the public picture the national legislature as a symbol of a young republic still growing into its capital.
