Marseille, France's principal Mediterranean port, is shown here as the gateway to North Africa, and the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railway commissioned the poster to promote that route. Roger Broders, one of the best-known designers of interwar travel posters, created the image, which Lucien Serre's Paris firm printed as a color lithograph around 1930. Posters like this were displayed in stations and travel offices to encourage passengers to continue by sea. The harbor and ships in the subject are central to its appeal, since they represented the journey itself.
