Tadoussac, a village where the Saguenay River meets the St. Lawrence in Quebec, is one of the oldest European settlements in Canada, and this view shows its small Jesuit chapel, which dates to the mid-1700s. By the time this glass negative was made, between 1890 and 1901, the village had become a fashionable summer resort for visitors from Quebec, Montreal and the United States, and the carriages noted in the subject headings reflect that seasonal traffic. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of scenic and historic places, made many such pictures to meet the demand from travelers and tourists.
