Kensington Avenue, one of the busiest commercial streets in north Philadelphia, is the setting here, and the scene shows a crowd turning on a horse-drawn vehicle. The record dates the event to February 1910, a stretch when Philadelphia's streetcar system was tangled in labor disputes and street violence was common along transit routes. Crowds often targeted cars and the people riding in them during such confrontations. The photograph comes from George Grantham Bain's news service, whose glass negatives captured many urban disturbances of the period. Its value lies in showing how quickly a street dispute could turn physical.
