Issued in the name of Governor Whitman, this lithographed proclamation calls on New Yorkers to take part in a state military census in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War. Such counts gave the state an inventory of men and resources it could draw on for defense and for the National Guard, and they were often publicized through printed notices like this one. The poster was printed by the Eagle Job Printing Department in Brooklyn, a reminder that the state's wartime appeals were produced by local commercial shops as well as official offices. It is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection, a group of wartime posters gathered by the Straights.
