Dressed in the uniform of a Red Cross nurse, this color reproduction of a watercolor by illustrator Maud Humphrey was made around 1899, several years before the United States entered World War I. The subject is a child-oriented sentimental scene rather than a battlefield, and the catalog tags it under "Children." Humphrey was known for such pictures, and the publisher Frederick A. Stokes Company held the copyright. The Red Cross emblem reflects the organization's growing public visibility after its American founding in 1881. The date and attribution come from an unverified caption card, so treat them as provisional.
