Few daguerreotypes of the early 1850s are titled as openly as this one, which identifies its subject by a cause rather than a name. The sitter is not identified in the record, but the title places her within the temperance movement, which drew many women into public reform work before the Civil War. Hand-coloring, applied by hand to the silvered plate, added tints to what would otherwise be a monochrome image, and the oval scroll pattern on the case reflects the decorative styles common to such cases. The photographer is unknown, but the piece gives a sense of how portraiture and reform politics overlapped in mid-century America.
