The American University, chartered by Congress in 1893 under the sponsorship of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was still an early-stage institution when this view was made around 1899. Institutional views like this one were often sold as commercial souvenirs, showing a young campus to alumni, supporters, and prospective students. The print is signed "Jenkins" in the lower right corner, and the shelflist card links it to the publisher Andrew B. Graham, whose name appears on the imprint. Such offset photomechanical prints were a cheap way to reproduce photographs in the 1890s.
