Few pictures in this group show a bank, and this exterior of the American Security & Trust Company, photographed in 1901, records a commercial building in the middle of the capital's changing financial life. The company was a local trust firm, part of the wave of banking houses that served Washington's growing government and business community around the turn of the century. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who made the photograph, spent much of her career documenting the city's buildings and institutions, and her collection now resides at the Library of Congress. The print was later published in *American Heritage*, which helped bring such views of everyday civic architecture to a wider audience.
