The subject here is the Long Island Rail Road, the line that carried passengers and freight east from Brooklyn across Long Island toward the farming and resort towns at its far end. By 1882 the railroad was a busy link between the city and the island, and its growth tracked the expansion of New York's suburbs and markets. The record for this view gives little beyond its title and date, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of railroad life in the early 1880s, when steam locomotives and iron rails were changing how people traveled around the harbor.
