Dated Monday, July 20, 1846, this view shows Saratoga Springs, New York, a town that drew visitors for its mineral springs long before the Civil War. By the 1840s it had become a fashionable summer resort, with large hotels, boarding houses, and shaded streets where guests came to drink the waters and to see and be seen. Although the gallery files it under Saratoga National Historic Park, that park preserves the 1777 Revolutionary War battlefields several miles away, so this scene belongs to the town's resort history rather than to the battles. The date alone places it in the busy midsummer season, when the spa was at its most crowded.
