Among the classroom picture sheets Louis Prang's Boston firm produced, this one belongs to a series of aids for object teaching, here devoted to gardening. The method asked children to learn from concrete things they could see and handle, not from memorized words, and it drew on Pestalozzi's ideas as American schools adopted it in the 1860s and 1870s. Colorful lithographs like this gave teachers a durable picture to hold up so a class could discuss a subject such as a garden. The record dates the print to about 1874.
