Among the many trade pictures in this collection, this one stands out for its educational purpose: it was issued as one of Prang's aids for object teaching, a method that taught schoolchildren through concrete pictures and things they could see and handle. Louis Prang's Boston firm, L. Prang & Co., was a leading chromolithographer, and in the 1870s its color prints were used to help children learn about everyday work and the people who did it. The shoemaker here reflects that goal, presenting a familiar trade as a lesson in how ordinary goods were made. The print is dated to about 1874.
