A caravan of pack animals and wagons crosses a bare desert plateau in this view, with the Grand Canyon's rim and broad open country stretching behind it. The image dates to around 1906, a time when the canyon was still reached mostly by wagon, stagecoach and mule train, long before the railroad and paved roads brought large crowds to the rim. Photographs like this one helped spread the canyon's reputation to eastern audiences and show how travelers depended on animal transport across the Arizona high desert. The caption card that accompanies the record is unverified, so the exact route and the identity of the party are not confirmed.
