Among the botany plates from the Pacific Railroad surveys, this one shows the Douglas fir, a conifer named for the Scottish plant collector David Douglas, who gathered specimens in the Pacific Northwest in the 1820s and 1830s. J. Young drew the color lithograph for the government's survey reports on the 47th and 49th parallels, published in the mid-1850s while Congress weighed possible routes for a transcontinental railroad. Plates like this gave readers in the East one of their first detailed looks at western trees that had until then been known mostly through dried specimens.
