This plate shows *Delphinium nudicaule*, the red larkspur, a wildflower of California whose scarlet, tubular blooms set it apart from the blue and violet larkspurs most gardeners know. William Fitch drew the plant and Vincent Brooks, Day & Son printed it as a hand-colored lithograph for plate 5819 of *Curtis's Botanical Magazine* in 1870. That monthly journal, founded by William Curtis in 1787, paired exact images with botanical descriptions and was widely used by gardeners, nurserymen and scientists. Notice how the artist records the spurred flowers and divided leaves in enough detail for identification.
