Whipple's yucca, shown in this plate from *Curtis's Botanical Magazine*, grows on dry hillsides in southern California and northern Baja California. It sends up a dense, candle-like spike of white flowers above a rosette of stiff, sword-shaped leaves. The species is named for Amiel Weeks Whipple, an army officer who surveyed routes across the Southwest in the 1850s and collected plants along the way. Plates like this one were drawn from living or pressed specimens, transferred to stone for lithography, and colored by hand, a slow process that let publishers render plant form and color with care. This example appeared in volume 125 of the magazine, published in London in 1899.
