This plate shows the saguaro, a towering columnar cactus of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and northwestern Mexico, which the record lists under its older name, *Cereus giganteus*. It appeared in *Curtis's Botanical Magazine* in 1892, a monthly journal that had been publishing hand-colored plant portraits since the late 1700s. The drawing is credited to "M.S." and was lithographed by J.N. Fitch and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, a London firm known for color plate work. Botanical plates like this one were meant to record a plant's form accurately for scientists and gardeners who would never see it in the wild.
