The mountain lady's slipper, a pouch-shaped orchid of western North American woodlands, is the subject here, with its drooping, inflated lip set against broad, twisting petals. The plate was drawn with the initials "M.S." and lithographed by J.N. Fitch, then printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, a London firm that produced many of the colored plates for *Curtis's Botanical Magazine*. Published in 1893, it reflects the magazine's long tradition of precise, hand-colored botanical illustration, which served both scientific description and the growing Victorian interest in orchids.
