The blue-and-white spurred flower here is the Colorado columbine, *Aquilegia caerulea*, a mountain plant of the Rocky Mountains that was little known in Britain when this plate appeared. The drawing was made by W. Fitch, the botanical artist Walter Hood Fitch, and lithographed and printed by Vincent Brooks, one of London's leading lithographic printers. It was issued as plate 5477 in *Curtis's Botanical Magazine* in 1864, a monthly periodical that for decades gave readers accurate, hand-colored portraits of newly discovered and cultivated plants. Look closely at the long nectar spurs and the outward-curving petals, which the engraver had to capture precisely for botanists to identify the species.
