Looking up from the lower slopes of Mount Carmel, this view takes in the port town of Haifa on the Mediterranean coast of what was then Ottoman Palestine. The photochrom process, a early color printing method developed in Switzerland, was used to hand-tint black-and-white photographs by applying colored stones, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold these prints in America as travel views of the Holy Land. Haifa was a modest coastal town in the 1890s, and pictures like this one gave American viewers a glimpse of a place many would never visit.
