Few landmarks in the United States were photographed as often as the Grand Canyon, and this c1899 photoprint stands out for its copyright line naming H.G. Peabody, a commercial photographer who issued views of western scenery for sale to a public that was just beginning to travel to the canyon's rim. By the late 1890s, visitors were arriving by stagecoach and early rail connections, and printed views like this one helped shape how Americans pictured the gorge: vast, layered, and nearly beyond description. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so they are best treated as working information.
