A pencil drawing of Gum Spring, Virginia, dated June 18, 1863, this sheet was sketched on the march toward Gettysburg, and its subject is a scene along the Little River Turnpike. That June, both armies were moving through the Virginia countryside as Confederate forces pushed north into Pennsylvania, and soldiers and artists alike recorded the roads, villages and farmland they passed. A quick field sketch like this one, made in graphite on the move, captures the landscape as it looked to someone traveling through it. The record gives no artist's name, so the drawing's value lies mainly in its date, place and location.
