This pencil drawing, dated August 26, 1863, shows a field kitchen near Beverly Ford in Virginia, a crossing on the Rappahannock River. The ford had seen heavy cavalry fighting in June of that year, when Union and Confederate horsemen clashed in the battle known as Brandy Station, and by late summer the armies were encamped in the same countryside. Sketches made close to the troops like this one record the everyday arrangements that kept soldiers fed and working between battles. The Library of Congress holds the drawing as a gift from J.P. Morgan.
