Dated February 8, 1815, this watercolor shows a cassia tree growing west of Spanish Town, the former seat of colonial government in Jamaica. The inscription places it near a site recorded as Bridge Tavern, a roadside stop that suggests travelers and carts once passed the spot regularly. Wild cassia, a tree with showy yellow blossoms and long dark pods, was a familiar part of the island's lowland landscape, and artists working in Jamaica in the early 1800s often drew such plants with close attention to their form. The exact date and place make the sheet a useful record of how the island's roadside vegetation was observed at that time.
