Unlike many botanical studies on this board, this watercolor is tied to a specific place: St. Ann, one of the parishes on Jamaica's north coast. Dated between 1808 and 1816, when Britain held the island as a major sugar colony, it belongs to a wave of work by artists and naturalists who recorded the island's trees and plants for patrons, scientific collectors and planters. The mix of watercolor, black ink and pencil suggests the artist sketched the outline first and then added color. Careful records like this helped Europeans learn the tropical landscape they were profiting from, and they remain useful for studying the island's vegetation at the time.
