Flora" is not a botanical study but a personified figure, the Roman goddess of flowers, shown as a woman surrounded by blooms. It was printed around 1873 as a tobacco package label by Schumacher & Ettlinger, a New York lithography firm whose Murray Street address appears in the imprint. In the 1870s, manufacturers used colorful labels like this to make their goods stand out on shop shelves, and lithography allowed several inks to be layered at a modest cost. The pairing of a graceful female figure with a floral motif was meant to suggest refinement to buyers.
