Among the many flower plates on this board, this one shows *Brodiaea grandiflora*, a bulbous plant from western North America that European gardeners prized for its clusters of showy blossoms. The lithograph, drawn and printed by S. Holden, was issued in 1846 as an illustration opposite page 221 of volume 12 of *Paxton's Magazine of Botany*, a London periodical founded by the gardener and designer Joseph Paxton. Hand-coloring was added to the printed outline, so the tones vary a little from copy to copy. Plates like this helped readers in Britain identify and grow plants that were still new to them.
