An ox-eye daisy and a black-eyed Susan share a single sheet in this June 1882 watercolor, painted in South Newbury, Vermont. The inscription on the back labels them with their older botanical names, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum and Rudbeckia hirta, a reminder that both belong to the composite family. The ox-eye daisy came to North America from Europe and spread along New England roadsides and pastures, while black-eyed Susan is native to the continent, so the pair sets an immigrant weed beside a homegrown wildflower. Layered watercolor and gouache give the petals a soft, chalky body.
