The Old Mare, the Best Horse" presents a worn-out but beloved animal as the finest horse of all, a sentiment that suited the sentimental tastes of 19th-century American buyers. Scott Leighton, who signed the image, worked for Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued thousands of inexpensive chromolithographs. Published around 1881, the print was made by layering colored inks from multiple stones, a process that let the firm sell affordable color pictures to middle-class households. Horses were among the firm's most reliable subjects, since many Americans in that era still depended on them for work, travel, and farm life.
