A sure horse for the first money, a chromolithograph signed by John Cameron, takes its title from the language of the betting ring, promising a horse that will win the prize. The New York firm of Currier & Ives published it around 1886, during a period when its sporting prints, especially those of horses, were among its most popular lines. Chromolithography built up a picture from several color stones, which let the firm offer bright, affordable images to middle-class homes. Notice how the horse is drawn to suggest speed and strength, the qualities buyers of the time most wanted to see in a champion.
