Under the words "That government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth," this 1917 color lithograph borrows Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to ask Americans to buy Liberty Bonds. The Treasury sold these bonds to finance the country's entry into World War I, and the government ran a series of Liberty Loan drives that year and the next, each supported by posters like this one. Pairing the nation's wartime borrowing with Lincoln's 1863 speech on a union kept whole through civil war was a deliberate appeal to shared sacrifice.
