Its headline asks a blunt question, "Hun or home?", and the poster ties the purchase of Liberty Bonds to the safety of American families. Edwards & Deutsch, a Chicago lithography firm, printed it in 1918, when the federal government was relying on bond drives to help pay for the country's part in World War I. "Hun" was the Allied slur for German soldiers, and posters like this one cast the war as a direct threat to mothers and children at home. Liberty Bond campaigns leaned on emotional appeals as much as on patriotism, and this design shows how far that messaging could go.
