Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909 was a small county seat whose economy rested on farming, local trade, and the visitors who came to see the battlefield. The federal government had taken over the ground in 1895, and by then monuments from many states and regiments stood along the ridges and fields where the armies fought in July 1863. Veterans returned in growing numbers for anniversary gatherings, and town hotels and boarding houses served them alongside students and faculty of Pennsylvania College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary. Residents knew their town first as the site of the great battle, a reputation that shaped its trade and civic pride. The monuments in this view, rising above open farmland, mark the decades of remembrance that followed the fighting.
