Few towns are as closely tied to a single event as Titusville, where Edwin Drake's 1859 well became the first drilled in the United States specifically to produce petroleum for sale. The discovery set off an oil boom that turned this Crawford County settlement into a busy center of the young industry. Albert Ruger drew this bird's-eye panorama for the Chicago Lithographing Company in 1871, when such views presented growing towns with their streets, churches and works laid out for the viewer. The streets and rail lines are worth studying for signs of how quickly the town had expanded.
