The title places a reception at the White House in 1776, but the building was not begun until 1792 and was not ready for occupancy until 1800, so the scene likely reflects a later artist's or engraver's idea of Washington rather than a documented event. In 1776 Washington was directing the Continental Army from headquarters in and around New York City, and his days were given to troop movements and supply, not formal receptions. The picture is more useful as a view of how Americans imagined their first commander in the decades after the war than as a record of that year.
