Few daguerreotypes in the Library of Congress carry a family connection as direct as this one. It shows Gertrude Mercer McCurdy Hubbard with a baby, and she later became the mother-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell. The sixth-plate image sits in a plain leather case with a push-button closure and bears the maker's hallmark "Rinhart." Made between 1855 and 1859, it dates from the final years of the daguerreotype's popularity, just before paper prints and glass negatives took over portraiture. The photographer is unidentified, but the image forms part of the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs.
